Living in Carpinteria or Carp, as the locals call it, we can enjoy outside activities all year round. You can fish, skateboard, dance, walk the pathways of the salt marsh, do whale-, seal-, or bird-watching or work out outdoors. We have Mediterranean-like climate, and it never gets too cold or too hot. When most of the country shovels snow and shivers from cold, we in Carp enjoy the great outdoors. The city sits on a thin strip of fertile land nestled between the mountains and the ocean. This provides all kinds of possibilities to keep a person busy even during winter months.

Parks. Carpinteria is beautiful! Carpinteria has a large number of neighborhood parks: El Carro Park, Franklin Park, Heath Ranch Park, Linden Park, Lions Club Park, Lookout Park, Memorial Park, Monte Vista Park, Rincon Beach County Park, Toro Canyon Park, or Tar Pits Park– a historically and ecologically special place to go. Are you looking for playing baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball or maybe catching Frisbee? Or maybe you prefer taking your Pilates or Yoga outside. Most parks have large grassy areas as well as hiking trails, playgrounds for children and areas for grilling, and picnics. Just pick and choose your favorite park and activities they provide:

Walking on the beach. There are a number of excellent beaches in and around Carpinteria. The gorgeous long beach that fronts the ocean along the length of the city consists of Carpinteria City Beach, Carpinteria State Beach, the famous Rincon Beach, and Padaro Beach.
Walking in soft sand is a killer workout and burns more calories than walking on flat ground, over 600 calories an hour, to be exact. Some experts suggest that you can burn twice as many calories walking in soft sand. Keep it safe by wearing shoes- you don’t want to get shin splints if you go barefoot for too long. Start easy, though- walk on the beach for a few minutes at a time to get used to it. You’ll be surprised how hard it is.
Running/ Jogging. It doesn’t matter what your age or ability, anyone who wants to can start running for fitness. It does not appeal to everyone, but it does not take a lot of special equipment or know how to do. You can run a lot or a little. You can go running with other people or by yourself. Running is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health as well as helping you to maintain a healthy weight. You can run fast and burn 700 calories an hour or burn 500 calories an hour while jogging at 5 mph.
Beach Volleyball. You are in the birth place of beach volleyball after all. You can burn more than 150 calories an hour, depending on how hard you work and it’s a great way to meet other people at the beach while having fun.

Surfing. We live in the surfers’ paradise, the destination for many who live to surf. The Rincon is known world-wide for its consistent performance. Surfing is a total body workout that will challenge every muscle in your body. Even if you just paddle out to the waves and fall off (like I do), you’ll get a great workout.

• Swimming. Swimming in Carp starts young. The city pool offers swimming lessons, lap swim, swim team and water aerobics. You can practice swimming in the Pacific if you prefer and burn a bunch of energy especially in winter.
Cycling. Bike rides are a great exercise and a way to see the area and enjoy the sounds of the countryside and even smell the flowers. If you take your time and go for all day long leisurely bike ride, you’ll burn 450 calories an hour without even thinking about it. If to moderate cycling you prefer vigorous cycling you will burn 600 calories an hour.
Hiking. We have many picturesque hiking trails for those who are up for hiking adventures. Anytime you add elevation to your walks, you’ll burn more calories. If you carry a backpack, you’ll challenge yourself even more, all while enjoying a little nature.
Inline Skating (Rollerblading). Inline skating is great aerobic exercise, works your major muscle groups, and helps improve your balance. Plus, you can burn up to 600 calories per hour with less than half the shock and impact caused by a similar running workout.

Golf. Although Tee Time Driving Range is no golf course, you can keep your game in top form here. Golf can be a good workout if carry your clubs and walk the course. Tennis. Like golf, a game of tennis can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. Chasing the ball and hitting it like you’re a pro will give you a great workout, burning up to 400 calories for a 150-lb person.
Shopping. Okay, maybe shopping isn’t the highest intensity activity, but it can be very aerobic under the right circumstances, and you can burn 215 calories per one hour. If shopping is your activity of choice, make it count by walking fast, taking the stairs and avoiding fatty foods at the food court.
Gardening/ Mowing Lawn. If you have ever turned soil, hoed and weeded a garden you already know that gardening can be good exercise. A light gardening will help you burn 250 calories an hour. An avid gardener can burn twice as many calories. Activities such as digging, planting, weeding, and harvesting incorporate all types of physical movement that benefit your flexibility, strength, and even aerobic fitness. But have you considered that gardening can help you get in shape both physically and mentally? Gardening also helps support healthful dietary behaviors, such as eating a balanced and varied diet. People who grow fruits and vegetables tend to eat more of these healthy foods. But the benefits are not all to the body. Tending a garden is an ideal stress reliever. It helps relieve feelings of anxiety and provides a break from the general rush of life. Gardening gives you a chance to think about your concerns, take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life or just spend a few moments daydreaming.
Yard Work. Cleaning the gutters, hanging your Christmas lights and performing all the needed work in the yard may be not as much fun, but- oh well- has to be done even if you live in paradise like here. It’s a great workout makes you burn 370 calories an hour.
