Spring Equinox

Celebrating the coming of the spring
The spring equinox- one of the four great solar festivals of the year- has been celebrated in cultures all over the world for as long as we have written history. Day and night are equal, poised and balanced, but about to tip over on the side of light. The spring equinox is sacred to dawn, youth, the morning star and the east. Just as the dawn is the time of new light, so the vernal equinox is the time of new life. The astrological year begins on the equinox when the moon moves into the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries, the Ram.

Eggs are one of the symbols of this festival since they represent new life and potential. In many cultures eggs are dyed red (the color of life and beauty) and other colors. In many Slavic cultures (including Ukraine) there is a tradition to decorate eggs covering them with magical symbols for protection, fertility, wisdom, strength, etc. Dyed and beautifully decorated eggs (pysanky) are given as gifts and used as charms.
